Printing

The CSE department has both central printers and printers in individual offices.

Central printers

Central printers are available for use by all CSE Faculty, graduate students and staff. Toner, paper and maintenance are supplied by the department. Each printer location has extra paper available so that you can add paper to the printer when it is empty.

CSEHelp maintains the central printers in the CSE building. If you find a problem with a printer (out of toner, no paper in the printer room, mechanical problem), please send mail to csehelp@ucsd.edu.

Using a printer from your workstation

To setup access to a printer on your computer, follow the standard procedures for the operating system you are using to connect to a network printer. In some cases, particularly with older operating systems, you may need some of the following information to connect to a network printer:

  • Host name or IP address of the printer (each printer has label with the host name listed - for example p1234-b1 would be p1234-b1.ucsd.edu)
  • Manufacturer of the printer (e.g. Hewlett Packard)
  • Model number of the printer (listed on the front of the printer or from the list below)
  • Network connection method (LPD, IPP or Jetdirect are acceptable choices)

The common printers are capable of accepting print jobs in both PCL and postscript form. If given the choice when setting up the printer on your computer, please select PCL as that works most reliably. Also, please make sure you select the proper printer manufacturer and model. Incorrect printer setup could cause reams of garbled data to be printed.

Saving paper

Most central printers have duplexers that allow printing on both sides of the paper. Please make use of this feature when possible to save paper. Also, please consider whether it is really necessary for certain things to be printed.

Available printers

The host names of the central printers are in a standardized form to help more easily identify printers when setting up access to them on your computer. All printer names start with a “p”, are followed by the room number, then followed by a '-', then followed by 'b' for a B&W printer or 'c' for a color printer and then followed by a number indicating a printer number in case there are multiple similar printers in a single location.

Personal printers

In addition to the central printers, there are printers in certain people's offices. In the case of printers in faculty offices or graduate student offices, the printers are owned by a faculty member or a research group. The costs of toner and maintenance of these printers is the responsibility of the owner of the printer. You can either purchase toner and contract for service yourself. Or, you can contact CSEHelp and provide an index number to have new toner purchased or service scheduled. CSEHelp may not have your particular toner cartridge on hand. So, please be aware that there may be a delay in a replacement cartridge arriving. There is no charge for printer paper. You may pick up a ream or two from any central printer room. Please do not take whole cases of paper at one time. Also, as with all printers, please strongly consider whether a document should be printed at all.

Personal printers for administrative staff

Although OEC manages administrative staff workstations, the department has contracted with CSEHelp to maintain printers in administrative staff offices. Staff members may contact CSEHelp if they need a new toner cartridge or maintenance on their printer.  To use a new printer, you will need to contact OEC to configure your workstation to use the printer.
