Abstract:
Bioinformatics is mostly an applied, data driven science. However, many problems do present algorithmic/combinatorial changes, at least in the error free case. In this informal talk, I'll take two recent examples, one involving rearrangements in cancer genomics first described by Barbara McClintock in 1939. The second example from genetics involves detection of genomic regions for a population adapting to selective constraints.  In both cases, I will present our modeling of the problem, and (partial) solutions.
