U.S. News & World Report is out with an expanded version of its 2017 Best Global Universities, ranking the 1,000 top research universities in the world (up from 750 ranked last year). The universities are spread across 65 countries.

Despite the larger number of universities in the rankings, UC San Diego overall climbed four spots to be ranked #15 globally. There were also 22 subject areas in which relevant campus departments received high enough marks to put them among the top 40 in their respective subjects. In Computer Science, UC San Diego's program was ranked #17.  UC Berkeley was the only other UC campus among the top 20 computer-science programs (Berkeley was at #7). The only other California schools in the top 20 were Stanford (at #3), USC (#13) and Georgia Tech edging out UC San Diego for the #16 spot.

In dissecting the Computer Science ranking, some of the strongest indicators came from the total number of citations for UC San Diego computer science publications among the 10 percent most-cited publications -- which placed the department at #13 globally. One factor detracting from UC San Diego's reputation reflected relative weakness in forging international collaborations in computer science -- with the department failing to make it into the top 100 universities based on that indicator. Another indicator for the computer science ranking involves the campus research reputation, judged globally and regionally; surprisingly, the UCSD program ranked among the top 25 globally, but further down at #41 ranked for its 'regional' research reputation.
