Amazon is making a special effort in its search for Ph.D. students eager to work on real-world data sets motivated by business questions, as well as "exciting and challenging machine learning problems."  The central machine-learning team at Amazon, through a CSE alumnus in machine learning, is reaching out to UC San Diego computer science Ph.D. students and alerting them to the looming February 10 deadline for applications for internships with the team next summer.

at Amazon working on the
machine learning team.

The team at Amazon has multiple internship positions available in Seattle and Palo Alto for Ph.D. students. Their projects span the gamut of recommender systems, streaming data analysis, natural language understanding, deep learning, bandit algorithms, record matching, reinforcement learning, causal inference, dialog management, and more.

"The real-world context provides ample opportunity for the design of novel algorithms, and rich data is readily available to test algorithms," said CSE alumnus Sheeraz Ahmad (Ph.D. '15), who is now a Research Scientist at Amazon. "We seek Ph.D. students who are eager to both design ML solutions and to understand how they work on real data."

Anyone interested can contact Amazon's Ahmad directly for more information at asheeraz@amazon.com, but they should also be sure to complete the online application if they want to move forward for consideration. Ahmad notes that Amazon supports equal opportunity and diversity, and cautions graduate students to apply by February 10 "for best consideration" for the summer internships.
