Alumni Giving Challenge Honors Rick Ord

As we bid farewell to Rick Ord (at least as a full-time instructor), it’s time to honor and continue his legacy.During a recent retirement party, Taner Halicioglu ’96 made a generous pledge to the Rick Ord Educational Excellence Endowment Fund, will create four undergraduate scholarships each year. These Rick Ord Scholars will build a long-lasting legacy for Rick and the CSE Tutor program.

Rick started taking undergrad classes when the department was called Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In the intervening years, he earned an MS in computer science, worked as a Unix system programmer for Academic Computing Services, taught at UC San Diego Extension, and ultimately became a fulltime lecturer. During his productive career, Rick was honored for his teaching 14 times.

CSE is challenging our alumni to raise at least $50,000 by Homecoming 2019 (October 18-20) to unlock a matching $150,000 gift from Taner.

To make the challenge even more exciting, Rick will send one piece from his UC San Diego memorabilia collection to anyone who makes a significant gift. Supplies are limited.

You can make an instant gift or donate appreciated stock. Corporate matches are also welcome and count towards the challenge. If you have questions, please email Laura Lothian.
