Message from the Chair

      Dean Tullsen

Though summers are relatively quiet, there's still a lot going on. In the past few months, CSE faculty and students have enhanced environmental monitoring, credit card security and other realms.

We also wished Rick Ord a fond farewell during alumni and student events in Seattle, the Bay Area and San Diego. It's sad to have him retire, but reaffirming to see the affection his former students have for him.

Of course, news is ongoing. We hope you follow our continuing successes on TwitterFacebook and LinkedIn. If you have news to share, story ideas or comments for our CSE Communications Team, please send them to newsworthy@cs.ucsd.edu.

It's hard to believe the school year is just around the corner. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again very soon!

Rick Ord's farewell tour took him through Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area and back home to UC San Diego. We're all going to miss Rick, but we have a sneaking suspicion we will continue to see him around campus from time to time. See below for more pictures, and read Celebrating Rick Ord for a deeper dive into his legacy.

Alumni Giving Challenge Launched to Honor Rick Ord

As we bid farewell to Rick Ord, it's time to honor his legacy. During his recent retirement party, Taner Halicioglu ’96, made a generous pledge to the Rick Ord Educational Excellence Endowment Fund, which will create four undergraduate scholarships each year. These Rick Ord Scholars will build a long-lasting legacy for Rick and the CSE Tutor program.

We challenge our CSE alumni to raise at least $50,000 by Homecoming 2019 (October 18-20) to unlock a matching $150,000 gift from Taner.

To make the challenge even more exciting, Rick will send one piece from his UC San Diego memorabilia collection to anyone who makes a significant gift. Supplies are limited.

You can make an instant gift or donate appreciated stock. Corporate matches are also welcome and count towards the challenge. If you have questions, please email Sean Burns or call 858-246-0593.

Research Highlights

Many of us have experienced that urgent call/email/text from the credit card company saying our card has been compromised. But now, a new app helps inspectors detect gas station credit card skimmers and thwart the fraudsters.

Read about CSE student Jasmine Simmons' experience with the Smartfin Projectwhich places data-gathering sensors in surfboard fins. Participating surfers can catch that wicked left and support critical UC San Diego oceanographic research.

Did you have to impose a social media blackout to hide from Avengers Endgame spoilers? Such a waste. SpoilerNet is a new AI tool, developed by CSE Assistant Professor Ndapa Nakashole and others, that automatically detects spoilers

CSE Community in Action

Engineers for Exploration (E4E) is an interdisciplinary student group who develop and use new technologies to explore the world. On August 28, this year's undergraduate cohort shared their summer research with visitors. Participants used virtual reality to explore an underground temple and learn about a developing technology to help ocean divers monitor coral reefs and other marine life.

Computer science students are getting involved in high-level research projects in the beginning of their college careers thanks to an innovative program at UC San Diego. The Early Research Scholars Program (ERSP) teams students up with professors who have ongoing research projects. Students get guidance from a centralized mentoring team, which helps them with the basic skills needed to conduct research, so their professors can focus on the details of each project. Students conduct research on everything from autonomous cars, to the microbiome, to software verification. The program has been such a success, it is expanding to multiple universities, with plans to keep it growing. Donations to support the success of this program at UCSD CSE are always welcome.

Rick Ord was the guest of honor at the recent CSE Alumni Picnics in Seattle (Row 1) and the San Francisco Bay Area (Rows 2 and 3). Many thanks to Rick for his many years of service and to the alumni who came by to say hello.
