Biology has transformed into a quantitative science with the advent of technologies that produce large amounts of data, whose analyses demand advanced computation. The data include measurements of genomic variation, change in expression of transcripts, proteins, metabolites. It also includes study of genomic switches that regulate expression, as well as networks of interacting genes, proteins, DNA, RNA, and microbes that are active in a biological system. The bioinformatics research group in CSE is a diverse and dynamic group of faculty, staff, and students engaged in research in all aspects of the field, with a focus on novel analyses of data from these technologies. CSE Bioinformatics is an integral part of an independent Bioinformatics PhD program on campus with faculty from across the campus, including Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biology, Mathematics, Medicine, Pharmacy, Moores Cancer Center, as well as nearby institutes including the Salk and JCVI.
