Calit2's Qualcomm Institute
Under the direction of UCSD CSE Professor Larry Smarr, the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) is a collaboration of UC San Diego and UC Irvine. Its mission is to extend the reach of the Internet throughout the physical world. At UCSD, the interdisciplinary organized research unit operates under the Qualcomm Institute name, with more than 350 affiliated faculty and a dedicated staff of more than 100 technical professionals, research scientists and administrators. In addition to its broad mandate in telecommunications and information technology, research in Calit2's Qualcomm Institute has focused on four societal applications (health, energy, the environment and culture) and four enabling technologies (cyberinfrastructure, wireless, photonics, and nano-micro-electromechanical systems (nano-MEMS).
San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC)
Under the direction of UCSD CSE Professor Fran Berman, SDSC's mission is to develop and use technology to advance science. In selecting projects and allocating resources, SDSC focuses on five program areas: Integrative Biosciences, Data and Knowledge Systems, Environmental Sciences, High-end Computing and Communications, and Grid and Cluster Computing.
