Kenneth Bowles gained world renown for initiating and leading a largely student-driven project that culminated in the creation of the UCSD Pascal programming system. Bowles was on the UC San Diego faculty from 1965 to 1984. During his 19-year tenure on campus, he helped nurture many students and researchers, who went on to make breakthroughs of their own. Donations in memory of Professor Bowles provide support to scholarships for undergraduates who are majoring in Computer Science Engineering (CSE).

In the mid 1970s, the Pascal team, led by Kenneth Bowles, modified the original
Pascal language and created a portable programming language and operating
system that for the first time made micro-processors accessible to the
masses. The team filled thousands of requests for copies of the p-system,
and by the early 1980s, UCSD Pascal was being used as a teaching tool by
universities worldwide and was implemented by major corporations such as
Apple and IBM. Many of the concepts developed through UCSD Pascal are
still in use today in languages such as Java and Ada.
