CSE MAS WES Program

The Masters of Advanced Study Degree (MAS) in Wireless Embedded Systems (WES)

About MAS WES:

The next step in the wireless revolution is the connection of everyday devices through wireless technology. Embedded wireless technology is expected to explode in the next decade, and touch nearly every market sector, from personal electronics and medical devices, to the transportation infrastructure and manufacturing.

Next generation embedded wireless devices have unique requirements that dictate a holistic approach to their design. Their form factor, cost, and power consumption must be dramatically lower than existing cellular phones. The design of these devices requires a unique interdisciplinary background in systems, software, hardware, and communication theory.

The Master of Advanced Studies Degree (MAS) in Wireless Embedded Systems offers a new cross-disciplinary education paradigm, designed to provide high-level training for professional engineers who plan to become technical leaders in the burgeoning field. The degree is conferred by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and is managed by the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering at UCSD.

MAS WES Student Handbook and Checklist

WES MAS Student Handbook

The Handbook contains a variety of resources and information for navigating the WES program.

The Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) has put together a checklist of items to take care of before beginning your educational journey at UC San Diego.

Please note, some components in the GEPA checklists may not apply to everyone. You will need to reach each section in-detail to determine if something (i.e., opting in to the university's health insurance (SHIP), signing up for graduate housing, or submitting international transcript evaluations) applies to you.

Course Registration

Quarters

  • The University of California operates within the quarter system. Quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer) are eleven weeks long with the last week dedicated to final exams. Specific dates regarding quarter start, end, and important deadlines can be found on the Registrar’s site. MAS program calendars have unique class structures, so you will need to reference your cohort calendar for specific class dates. However, we still follow university deadlines form payments and grade submission.

Course Enrollment

  • All students in the MAS programs are enrolled by their Program Managers. Information will be provided prior to enrollment each quarter.
  • All MAS classes are restricted to MAS students in their respective programs. As such, your Program Manager needs to pre-authorize your enrollment in every class, every quarter.
  • Course materials will also be provided prior to or at the start of each quarter. You do not need to purchase course materials unless advised otherwise or if you prefer a format we do not offer.

Required Courses

  • Each MAS program has its own set of courses that are required for graduation. The objective of these types of courses is to provide competency in foundational topics.

Capstone Courses

  • In addition to core courses, students are required to take a capstone course to complete their program.

Course Auditing

  • Course auditing is only permitted when a student has not met the minimum mastery of course content or has approval from their program manager. The program manager will obtain instructor approval before placing a student in a course.
  • Alumni course auditing allows students to audit courses offered at the Jacobs School upon program completion. Graduating students are not eligible to audit courses until their degree is officially conferred through the University.

Course Offerings and Course Information

Course Offerings

Core courses and the capstone courses are only offered once per year. Students must sequentially enroll in these courses in accordance with the offered quarter. Any extenuating circumstances that may affect the scheduling of core courses must be discussed with the Program Manager.
