CSE 191 - SEMINAR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (2025-2026)

Units: 1-4

A seminar course on topics of current interest. Students as well as the instructor will be actively involved in running the course/class. This course cannot be counted toward an elective.  (1 - 4 units).

CSE 191's are not eligible for CSE elective credit unless they are offered as 4 units and taken for a letter grade. An approved petition required to use this type of CSE 191 towards CSE major requirements. No guarantee of the outcome of any of these types of petitions requests. Students are strongly encouraged to petition before completing the course to verify if the course will count towards major requirements. 

Students can only enroll in CSE 191 up to 3 times or 12 units maximum (whichever comes first).

CSE 191: Algorithms, Privacy, and Power (1 unit) with Imani N. S. Munyaka

  • Description: What does privacy mean when machines can see, predict, and decide? This course introduces students to the key ideas and debates surrounding artificial intelligence, privacy, and law. Through case studies, court decisions, and current events, students will examine how AI technologies both protect and threaten individual and collective freedoms. Each week, students participate in guided discussions that connect theory to real-world developments, fostering critical thinking and civic awareness.
  • No prerequisites.
  • How to Enroll: Submit an Enrollment Authorization System (EASy) request. 
  • Must enroll in the course for 1-unit and P/NP only.
