Rick Ord's farewell tour took him through Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area and back home to UC San Diego. We're all going to miss Rick, but we have a sneaking suspicion we will continue to see him around campus from time to time. See below for more pictures, and read Celebrating Rick Ord for a deeper dive into his legacy.
Alumni Giving Challenge Launched to Honor Rick Ord
As we bid farewell to Rick Ord, it's time to honor his legacy. During his recent retirement party, Taner Halicioglu ’96, made a generous pledge to the Rick Ord Educational Excellence Endowment Fund, which will create four undergraduate scholarships each year. These Rick Ord Scholars will build a long-lasting legacy for Rick and the CSE Tutor program.
We challenge our CSE alumni to raise at least $50,000 by Homecoming 2019 (October 18-20) to unlock a matching $150,000 gift from Taner.
To make the challenge even more exciting, Rick will send one piece from his UC San Diego memorabilia collection to anyone who makes a significant gift. Supplies are limited.
You can make an instant gift or donate appreciated stock. Corporate matches are also welcome and count towards the challenge. If you have questions, please email Sean Burns or call 858-246-0593.
Research Highlights
Many of us have experienced that urgent call/email/text from the credit card company saying our card has been compromised. But now, a new app helps inspectors detect gas station credit card skimmers and thwart the fraudsters.
Read about CSE student Jasmine Simmons' experience with the Smartfin Project, which places data-gathering sensors in surfboard fins. Participating surfers can catch that wicked left and support critical UC San Diego oceanographic research.
Did you have to impose a social media blackout to hide from Avengers Endgame spoilers? Such a waste. SpoilerNet is a new AI tool, developed by CSE Assistant Professor Ndapa Nakashole and others, that automatically detects spoilers.
