On Tuesday, January 24, UC San Diego interim executive vice chancellor Peter Cowhey convened the first of two faculty forums. The goal: to give faculty across campus a say in developing a university-wide Data Science Initiative. The second of the two Data Sciences and Analytics Faculty Forums is now scheduled for next week at the Faculty Club:
Date: Monday, January 30
Time: 9am - 10:30am
Location: Atkinson Pavilion, Faculty Club, UC San Diego
According to a campus-wide announcement from the executive vice chancellor, faculty in disciplines across the UC San Diego campus have demonstrated great interest in what is loosely dubbed "big data" and "data analytics." Advances in sensing and computing technologies are enabling the capture of data at unprecedented levels of detail, variety, spatial and temporal scale, and cost effectiveness.
Cowhey's announcement went on to note that "data-driven modelling offers tremendous opportunities for advancing our understanding of real-world phenomena and improving our capacity to address global challenges, ranging from mapping the human biome to managing climate change."
In an effort to harness this great potential and establish UC San Diego at the frontier of research both in basic data science and its applications in the domain sciences, campus leadership has assembled an informal faculty working group to suggest ideas to be addressed in formulating a campus wide Data Science Initiative. The Initiative will serve as a platform for connecting and supporting academics engaged in research and scholarly activities in the data sciences.
Cowhey and other working-group members will open the forum to get input from interested academics across all disciplines at the January 30 event, which is now open for registration.
Interested faculty members are encouraged to RSVP no later than this Friday, January 27 if they plan to attend the January 30 faculty forum. Please RSVP to: evc-events@ucsd.edu
Light refreshments will be available.
