FALL 2026 Graduate Course Updates

Updated August 7th, 2026

Important Enrollment Update: As part of the transition to the new Triton Student System (TSS), the CSE Graduate Program will no longer use SERF for course enrollment. We understand this is a change from previous quarters. We appreciate your patience as we transition to the new system.

Important Notes:

1. Please monitor your @ucsd.edu email address daily for course updates DAILY

2. For Fall 2026, the CSE graduate student course booking window begins on July 22, 2026 at 10am PST, for all new and continuing graduate students. There are no staggered individual appointment times; all graduate students have access to begin enrolling on the same day via the Triton Student System (TSS).

3. Check the Booking and Registration page for your enrollment appointment. Unlike previous years, graduate students will receive an assigned enrollment booking window through the new system. Please note that enrollment dates and times are subject to change.

4. Triton Enrollment Authorization (TEA) request can be submitted here: Triton Student System.

  • Please note: some TEA requests, including those for special topics courses, require instructor approval before they can be processed. As a result, these requests may take longer than 5 business days to be reviewed and approved.

5. Research-oriented courses: Some UCSD CSE courses are "research-oriented," meaning they target students planning to do research in the course's topic area or who prefer a more research-centric approach to learning.  These courses often involve significant student participation, including reading and discussing research papers, and completing larger-scale research-oriented projects.  They usually do not provide a MS Comprehensive exam option. Research-oriented courses are tagged in the list below.  Please consider this before enrolling in a research-oriented class.

Note: The "research-oriented" tags can help guide your course selection, but the course's syllabus and the instructor are the ultimate determinants of the course's content, how your work will be evaluated, and your grade assigned. Research-oriented courses can be found in the table below with an asterisk next to them (scroll to the bottom of the page).

  • Monitor your @ucsd.edu email regularly. Important updates regarding the Triton Student System (TSS)

Co-scheduled Courses

For CSE courses that are officially or unofficially co-scheduled:

Undergraduate students must enroll in the undergraduate version.

Graduate students must enroll in the graduate version.

Admitted CSE BS/MS students may request to enroll in the graduate version of the course after being admitted into the MS program.

CSE instructors are not directly involved with student enrollment. Do not contact the course instructor regarding enrollment concerns.

Note: This policy applies even if the corresponding undergraduate or graduate course is at capacity or is not offered in the same quarter. Students may not enroll in both versions of a co-scheduled course or in the graduate version if they have already completed the undergraduate one. No add, credit, or late-drop exceptions will be granted.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they are enrolled in the correct version.

Additional Graduate/Undergraduate Course Restrictions

  • In addition to the co-scheduled course policies above, individual faculty may have policies restricting students from enrolling in the graduate version of a course if the undergraduate version was completed at UCSD.
  • Students that complete the graduate version of any CSE course, may not enroll in the undergraduate version
  • Additional courses that have graduate/undergraduate course restrictions (this is in addition to courses marked as coscheduled in the UCSD catalog) are as follows:
    • CSE-118/CSE-218

    • CSE 120/CSE 220 (all instructors)

    • CSE 124/224. (MS students are permitted to enroll in CSE 224 only)

    • CSE 153/CSE 253 (including R sections).

    • CSE 176A/276D.

    • CSE 158/258, this also includes DSC 190 Intro to Data Mining (all sections) and DSC 148 (all sections)

    • CSE 150A, CSE 150B, CSE150/ 250A

No Late Add Policy
  • No late adds - no exceptions. The CSE department does not allow students to add courses past Week 2. If a student is not enrolled in enough units by the beginning of Week 1, the student should contact cse-grad-enrollment@ucsd.edu if an TEA request is needed for enrollment authorization. Otherwise, it is expected that CSE Graduate students finalize their schedule during Week 1.
  • TEA requests for Late Adds in the CSE Department will be denied, so please plan accordingly.
    • All students are expected to attend class for the first two weeks and complete assignments if they are on the waitlist for a course. Attending class and completing course assignments does not guarantee enrollment. If students choose to miss class or not turn in assignments while on the waitlist, the student will receive a "0" on all missed assignments, if they secure a seat in the course off the waitlist.
  • Please note an exception for CSE 293/298:
    • This course may be added after Week 2, please contact cse-ms-advisors@ucsd.edu for assistance or questions related to CSE 293/298 enrollment.
  • Please note an exception for CSE 299
    • This course may be added after Week 2, please contact cse-phd-advisors@ucsd.edu for assistance or questions about CSE 299 enrollment.

If your TEA request is approved, it is your responsibility to enroll or waitlist the course. The CSE department will not approve any late add requests.

Note: Clearance to enroll/waitlist a CSE Graduate course with a large waitlist does not indicate we intend to offer additional seats. The courses and sections we intend to offer are listed in the Schedule of Classes.

If you are not able to enroll in your CSE courses in Fall 2026, you may need to enroll in a subsequent quarter.

CSE instructors are not directly involved with student enrollment. Do not contact the course instructor regarding enrollment or major restriction concerns.
