Course Objectives: The Slide Rule: The Original Mind-Powered/Mind-Empowering Handheld Computer;
Brief Hisotry of Digital Computers; Neural Networks as Models of the Mind; The Web as a Library;
The Abacus, Sector, and Slide Rule. Subtitle: Computing before Computers; Digital Typography;
Game Theory and Computer Science
Course Description: A seminar providing an overview or a topic of current research interest
to the instructor. The goal is to present a specialized topic in computer science and
engineering to students.
Format: 1.5 hours of lecture per week on Wednesdays, 9:00 - 10:50 am, APM 2444.
First 5 Wednesdays of the quarter.
Prerequisites: Although this class is open to all majors, enrollment priority is given to
freshman students.
Other restrictions: Enrollment limit is set at 25. Enrollments are also staggered for this
class - only a few students from Senior, Junior, and Sophomore class levels will be allowed
to enroll into this class. Freshman students will then be able to enroll until this class is full.
Offered: Every quarter: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
