Guidelines for CSE Faculty

CSE HONORS PROGRAM GUIDELINES FOR FACULTY

CSE has outstanding students that are committed to exploring their own ability to delve into projects or tasks in computer science, computer engineering, bioinformatics and related technical fields.  The CSE Department welcomes faculty and student collaboration on extra-curricular projects and research.  Projects and research allow students to acquire an idea of what it is like to be a professional in that field.
  • Student must submit a one-page proposal to faculty
  • Faculty will review proposal and accept or reject
  • If proposal is accepted, Faculty will set meeting with student to review proposal and application for CSE Honors Program
  • Student must meet eligibility for admission (Junior-level standing, 3.5 GPA in CSE major courses and 3.25 GPA overall, completion of CSE 101, CSE 105 and CSE 110, completion of 12 units of upper-division CSE courses at UC San Diego)
  • Student must submit completed application to Faculty
  • Faculty will set requirements for completion of two-quarter project
  • First quarter requirement is completed in the first CSE 199H, 10-week quarter
  • Second quarter requirement is completed in a second CSE 199H, 10-week quarter
  • Both Student and Faculty must sign the application for the CSE Honors Program
  • Application is submitted to the CSE Students Affairs Offices, CSE Building, First Floor
     

ENROLLMENT IN CSE 199H

  • On submission of the application a CSE Academic Advisor reviews the application for completion of courses, grades, GPA, student-level and appropriate signatures
  • Applications are then forwarded to the Honors Program Coordinator for approval
  • After Coordinator's approval a section of CSE 199H is scheduled on Tritonlink for Faculty
  • Faculty is informed by CSE Academic Advisor of approval or denial of a student's application
  • If approved, student must enroll into CSE 199H by end of 2nd week of quarter, via WebReg on Tritonlink

FIRST QUARTER REQUIREMENT

  • Student meets with CSE Faculty as required
  • Student completes requirements for first quarter of CSE 199H
  • Faculty assigns a grade on completed work for First Quarter CSE Honors Program CSE 199H course
     

SECOND QUARTER REQUIREMENT

  • Student meets with CSE Faculty as required
  • Student completes requirements for Second Quarter of CSE Honors Program CSE 199H course
  • Finished Project
  • Written Honor Thesis
  • Presentation of honors project
  • Signature from Faculty on CSE Honors completion form

Indication of honor award for student diploma:

  1. "With distinction": Complete the 8 units of CSE 199H with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  2. "With high distinction": Complete the 8 units of CSE 199H with a GPA of 3.5 or higher
  3. "With highest distinction": Complete the 8 units of CSE 199H with a GPA of 3.8 or higher
