Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment ("Tenure-track" Assistant Teaching Professor)
The UC San Diego Data Science Undergraduate Program (joint endeavor of the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics and Cognitive Science) invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor with potential security of employment (‘’similar to tenure-track’’). The teaching faculty series at UC San Diego (whose official title is “Lecturer with (Potential) Security of Employment”) carries equivalent rights and responsibilities as the more traditional tenure-track faculty series, but with a stronger emphasis on teaching and scholarly activity related to education than on traditional disciplinary research activities.
Successful candidates will be outstanding educators and should provide evidence of effective and innovative undergraduate teaching in data science. They should also provide evidence of scholarly activity outside the classroom that has led to advances in data science education. In addition to teaching core courses, candidates are expected to lead the development and assessment of new educational initiatives, including applying for grants related to education. The successful candidates will provide guidance, leadership, and innovation for the data science undergraduate programs, with a specific focus on both adding to the high quality of these programs and on broadening the diversity of the student body in these programs.
The Data Science Undergraduate Program is a recently established multi-disciplinary undergraduate major at UC San Diego sponsored by the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics and Cognitive Science. The program has about 15 core faculty and several other participating faculty from various campus departments. UC San Diego is working on several other new initiatives related to data science and is committed to data science education and research.

In addition to the highest standards of scholarship, teaching, and professional activity, the preferred candidates for any position will have potential or demonstrated contributions to a climate that supports equity, inclusion, and diversity.
A Ph.D. or advancement to candidacy in Computer Science & Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or related disciplines is required at the time of application. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications in conformance with University of California policies.
Successful candidates will be members of the faculty in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and will be dedicated to teaching in the data science program. CSE is home to over 50 faculty and 500 graduate students who span a range of research areas in computer science, computer engineering and bioinformatics. In addition, the department works closely with the Center for Networked Systems (CNS), the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (CalIT2), the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and the Center for Wireless Communications (CWC), which provide unique opportunities and resources.
